Welcome to all new arrivals & those new to our park!

MANAGEMENT REPORT: Manager Dana Daves gave report. Park shirts may be purchased at the office, $5 each. Hats also available. A package from daughter of Marilyn Loutzenhiser (former resident, now deceased) arrived at office. It contained 2 red, 2 blue (size L) shirts. Daughter wondered if her mother possibly made these for someone? Please note sign near pool that reads “reserved morning only for postman”. If you received a water bill from this summer while you were up north, this may be paid with your rent check. Meters are read Feb., June, Oct. Orange stickers are available at office and should be displayed on all cars. If you see a vehicle without a sticker, feel free to ask driver if they are residents. “Rules and regulations” made before Daves began as managers should mirror those of sister park Ranchero Village with addition that “it is against our park rules to feed stray animals”. Dana said owner Walter Piper will be with us next week. Website for park is riovalleyestates.com

For those new to Rio Valley Estates, you are asked to complete forms showing home address, phone & lot number. Current residents who have changes in info should complete one too. You can find these forms in Friendship Hall or office area. These need to be completed & given to Dave Johnson at #93 as he prepares directories.

Board Members -- Properties – Ron Zoeller, Lynn Stamp, Mark Probst; Finance – Sandy Novak, Gordon Amos, Sandy Olson. If you have issues you’d like to present or discuss, you may contact a board member. They sit in a group up toward the right front of Friendship Hall prior to Monday meetings.

Treasurer Sandy Novak gave her report & it was approved. Properties chair Ron Zoeller reported committee still thinking about replacing curtains in kitchen if those there not okay as they are. Some residents here this summer noted those in place seemed to keep kitchen comfortable. Another comment was the kitchen lacks privacy for those counting monies after events. A suggestion we purchase a dolly to help with moving electronic piano around. When tucked away it is difficult to get out.

Pastor Bob Amos announces he & his wife are available behind stage in Friendship Hall Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 8-9 a.m.

We remind residents to wear name badges.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Don’t worry .. news will pick up as more folks arrive .. then you won’t have to put up with my silly jokes. Here’s some things I read on Facebook over the summer….

“A good friend does not put your name on the tag of the

gift bag. They know you’re going to reuse it!”

“We gotta start thinking about the world we’ll leave behind

for Betty White when we’re all gone!”

“I don’t think we get smarter as we get older …

we just run out of stupid things to do.”

“At the end of the day, I am grateful that my
blessings are bigger than my problems.”

MISCELLANEOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Marge Rexroad who has chaired Quilting for 15 years is “burned out” so is resigning. She encourages anyone who’d like to help (or chair) to volunteer. In past years MANY quilts have been given to needy throughout the Valley. You don’t have to be an expert quilter to help! We thank Marge for all she has done with this activity! All is set up behind stage in Friendship Hall.

Chuck & Nancy Gonnerman announce they will no longer chair St. Patrick’s Dinner which has been corn beef/cabbage the last few years. Previous to that a committee served Irish stew. Would someone want to volunteer for this? Committee would decide on menu.

Some residents of Rio Valley Estates have helped other seniors across the Valley serve Christmas Day dinner to 2000-3000 children in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. The non-denominational organization is known as Amigos de los Ninos de Mexico (definitition Friends of Children of Mexico). If you’d help, a planning meeting open to all will be held on Tuesday, Nov 12, 12:30 p.m. at Methodist Church in Donna.

Want to check out an “Iowa boy” who plays great steel guitar? He played at editor’s 1960 wedding dance & then played at her granddaughter’s wedding dance Sept. 28! His name is Lefty Schrage from West Union. RVE resident Diana Patrick had Lefty as school teacher. He plays with Dixon & Company at Hakuba’s Social Club when in Texas over the winter. Address is 911 N. Val Verde Rd, Donna. Lefty should be arriving from Iowa soon. They play from 3-6 p.m. There’s cold beer & room to dance. Some RVE residents enjoyed this last season. Get there early for a seat.

Some Puns I enjoyed ..

“She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.”

Pencil Cactus

Please do not plant these and if you already have one get rid of it
My lawn man got some sap in his eye and it was beat red and burning. He washed it out with water and washed his hands well., after I told him about handling this toxic plant, talked to him later and he said his eye was not burning and felt ok now.

Pencil Cactus

Where it lives:
  • It is originally from Eastern and South Africa but has adapted all over the world.
  • In some areas, such as Brazil, it is grown it as a fence. It is very effective as a fence b/c no one wants to touch the thing.
  • The plant grows very well in dry environments.
  • Some websites discuss how the plant can be trained and shaped. But that requires putting yourself in major danger. My advice is to stay clear and don’t touch it.
Problem:
  • The sap is the big problem and is extremely toxic.
  • It causes burns, and can cause blindness if it gets in the eyes.
  • I have also read some articles implicating the plant as a cause of an aggressive type of lymphoma. This cancer may in part be a result of ingesting the sap as part of folk “herbal remedies.”
  • More acutely, many have died after a minimal amount of sap ingestion.
Where is it now?:
  • I never really noticed the plant before, but now I see it everywhere.
  • I have seen smaller potted Euphorbia tirucalli plants for sale at most major home improvement/garden stores. However, I have not seen a warning label on any of the plants. In fact, in one nationwide-chain home improvement a plant pamphlet in the garden center talked about the benefits and care for the plants they sell and not a word about this dangerous plant that was profiled on its own page. Truly amazing and irresponsible.
  • So beware, stay away and keep it from kids and animals.
  • If you must have it, don’t plant this thing in your yard. It grows fast, is dangerous and hard to get rid of.  Now I have a big Euphorbia tirucalli from a previous home owner and no one wants to remove it.
