meeting Feb. 15th

RVE CLUB MEETING – Judy Nordquist, chair, called meeting to order. We welcomed new residents.

Meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag & singing of God Bless America. Meeting closed with singing of club song. Accompanist – Peg Hayelan Invocation –

John Geer spoke about his 40 yr old cousin, Derek Geer, lost recently in the line of duty. He was a deputy sheriff in Colorado. We joined in praying The Lord’s Prayer to remember him and other officers lost.

Secretary Report – Maxine Topel Treasurer Report – Charlotte Therrien MANAGEMENT REPORT – Manager Bob Davis reported pool repairs on the way, maybe today. He said we’re using a LOT of animal traps & office has checked all out. If you have one & not using it, let him know.
Recycling program has not been going the best.

Properties report was given by Ron Zoeller. Purchased recently were 12 noodles for swimming pool, 1st aid kit in kitchen, electric can opener to replace hand opener. Effective April 1, we need person (s) to handle can crushing & recycling. Ron reported park owner Walter Piper has agreed to pay half cost for the new freezer.

Brock Laing reported this Friday entertainment is Shake, Rattle & Roll, $5 at door. This is music from the 50s & 60s. He noted last week’s entertainers had the “crud”, not feeling well but did not cancel on us. He has some problems with advertising for final program on March 4 & this may cancel.
Park potluck is 5 p.m. before show. 42 attended potluck last week. If you want an interesting Jazz Banjo Band, call Brock. He has phone # for group that will come to your party for “pass the hat”. Brock announced FREE movie this week is a comedy, “Waking Ned Divine”.

Monday night dances are 7:00-9:30 p.m. $5 pp. Thanks to the Barnharts for chairing last week with 73 attending. Come dance to Hitman tonight. Alice Talbert will be celebrating her birthday at tonight’s dance. Bring cups after 3 to reserve your table.

Helen Curtis handles card duties. Call 603-674-3869 if you know of someone needing a card due to illness or death of family member. She places cards in office area for residents to sign every Monday. None this week so all is well, we believe.

Come for biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs this Sat., Feb. 20 – 7-8:30 a.m. Need minimum of 80 in order to repeat the following Saturday.

Sharon Barksdale brought up subject of rat problem in park. Exterminator says we need to take pro-active part. Tractor Supply has block of rat poison you can put under mobile. IN THE PARK ..
As of April 1, Paul Sprague is giving up being in charge of the can recycling, so looking for a new volunteer. Check with Paul if you want to know what it entails.

No Happy Hour this week…setting up for Vet’s Luncheon. No line dancing or YOGA this Thursday.
Choir Practice changed to 10:30 on Saturday, this week only.
No Quilting Feb. 23 due to Stroke Prevention Tests.
Park Breakfast is held at Fiesta Tex-Mex on Thursdays, 8 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Mary Norby reported Craft Sale went well, sign up for next year; a few tables available. Next year’s date is Feb. 9, 2017.

Ron Talbert asked if we want to continue with the Monday dances next season. Meet 3:30 pm today to discuss.

From Bruce Wells: Olympics is over. Congrats to Sherry Cheatum & Charlotte Therrien, 1st in euchre; David Clements, 2nd in Tex Hold’Em; Jerry Johnson & Virgil White, 4th in bean bag toss.

Medal winners are asked to come to next Monday meeting for pictures by Donna Gabbert (for park directory). Thanks to every participant, those who helped set up/take down for euchre tournament; those who brought cookies. Special thanks to Bev Telfor & Nancy Kerkau for playing so we could have an even number of women’s teams; to Billie Wells for making coffee & keeping steady supply of cookies for players. Finally, to Mark Wieners & Barney Wisniewski for officiating.

Bruce Wells says Weslaco Fire Dept. & a team of volunteers will be here Sat., Feb. 27, 1 pm for the Vial of Life program. Bruce has left forms to use or take to fill out prior to program. Volunteers will help you & provide vials/stickers. If desired, they will go to your residence to place them. Bring all meds, including non-prescription ones & your medical insurance info.
Anniversary-Birthday party was Sunday. Honored were: (50 yrs) Vern/Marilyn Cummins, Fred/Verleen Fehringer; (60 yrs) Jerry/Janie Maxwell, Ron/Alice Talbert, Ron/Bonnie Burnes. Couples who attended expressed their appreciation for a very nice party! “Thanks for flowers, cards & kind words”, they said.

Memorial Service to remember residents we’ve lost was held this morning with Tom Cassidy conducting. He opened by reading The 23rd Psalm. Songs sung by Tom & wife Bonnie were “Blessed Be The Tie That Binds” and “I’ll Fly Away”. Anyone from Illinois or has lived in Illinois is welcome to attend the Illinois Luncheon Tuesday, Feb. 16. It is at Luby’s, 2001 Exp. 83 W in Weslaco, 11:30 a.m. Tables are reserved. Vet’s Luncheon is Feb. 18, at noon, says Linda Palmero. Doors open at 11:30, your table service is provided. Committee will be setting up tables Wed., 2:30 pm so no happy hour. This is open to vets, spouses, $6 pp tickets sold in advance. Thanks to all who have donated silent auction/raffle items. Silent auction & ticket sales ended today. 60-40 & raffle items run through day of dinner. Irene Quail tells us recognition will be given to those in service during Vietnam Era (Nov.1, 1955–May15, 1975). If your name is not on the board, contact her 704-516-5360.

NASCAR Daytona 500 Race is Sunday, Feb. 21. Gates open at 11 am, green flag at noon. Admission is free, come watch race on our big screen, wear favorite race shirts & hats, cheer for your favorite driver. Concession stand will sell grilled burgers & hot dogs, includes pickle, assorted chips. Soda & water may be purchased. Ice cream banana splits available at 2 p.m. Donna Granath & Ron Zoeller chair.

Rio Valley Drive street dinner will be a potluck at Friendship Hall, Feb. 23, 11:45 am.

Feb. 23 Potato Bar tickets are on on sale, $5. Purchase tickets from Sally Hejlik, #296, or Sharon Sprague, #244. You can have sweet potato but must sign up when purchasing ticket. 5 p.m.
Park Pictorial Album. “Final session Feb. 24-25-26. You get free directory if you place order of $44 or more. $15 is cost of directory if you do not order pictures. Bring checkbook (or credit card) to pay day of sitting” says Donna Gabbert.

Hawaiian Luau is March 10. Tickets are available $8 pp ($64/table of 8) from Barnharts at #276. Price includes full mean, entertainment and dancing to Fred G. There will be prizes for decorated tables plus 50-50 draws.

March 16 HAPPY HOUR will be a Chicken Cook-Out on the new grill. Cost is $2.50; bring non-meat dish to share. Signup sheet will be provided later.

ROPA Show, chaired by Judy Shively is March 18, 1 p.m. $1 admission at door. Models can wear clothing from garage sales, flea markets, friends, hand-me-downs & of course ROPA. Theme for prizes are (1) prettiest purse (b) ugliest purse).
